In this lesson

Holiness is the basic characteristic of God. He is seen as many things such as love, light, and a consuming fire, but the basic ingredient of His nature is holiness. Moses declared, “…who is like thee, glorious in holiness.” (Exodus 15:11) We, as Christians, have a holy calling on our lives to follow in His steps. As children, therefore, we must understand our Father’s holiness to know what He is really like and be like Him. For He says, “… be ye holy: for I am holy!” (1 Peter 1:16)

I. What Is Holiness

A.Holy Vessels

These were vessels that had a peculiar, but unique purpose in the service of God.

1 Kings 8:4; 1 Chronicles 22:19; 2 Chronicles 5:5God called all the vessels used in His service in the tabernacle “the holy vessels”.

1 Kings 8:4 · KJV

4And they brought up the ark of the LORD, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and all the holy vessels that were in the tabernacle, even those did the priests and the Levites bring up.

1 Chronicles 22:19 · KJV

19Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of the LORD.

2 Chronicles 5:5 · KJV

5And they brought up the ark, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and all the holy vessels that were in the tabernacle, these did the priests and the Levites bring up.

Ezekiel 22:26These priests put no difference between the holy and profane.

Ezekiel 22:26 · KJV

26Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

Ezekiel 44:23; Leviticus 10:10God stated He would teach them the difference between the holy and profane.

Ezekiel 44:23 · KJV

23And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.

Leviticus 10:10 · KJV

10And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;

B.Holy Alter

The altar was distinctly different and pure from any other altar on the earth. It was one of a kind It represented Christ on the cross, the only true altar. One altar meant only one way to the Father (John 14:6).

Exodus 29:37; Exodus 40:10; Leviticus 10:12The altar was to be an altar most holy, and whosoever touched it must be most holy.

Exodus 29:37 · KJV

37Seven days thou shalt make an atonement for the altar, and sanctify it; and it shall be an altar most holy: whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy.

Exodus 40:10 · KJV

10And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt offering, and all his vessels, and sanctify the altar: and it shall be an altar most holy.

Leviticus 10:12 · KJV

12And Moses spake unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left, Take the meat offering that remaineth of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar: for it is most holy:

C.Holy Sabbath

This day was to be separate and peculiar from the other days of the week. There was to be no work done on this day.

Exodus 16:23; Exodus 20:8; Exodus 31:14-15; Nehemiah 9:14The sabbath day was to be kept holy.

Exodus 16:23 · KJV

Exodus 20:8 · KJV

8Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Exodus 31:14-15 · KJV

14Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

Nehemiah 9:14 · KJV

14And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:

Exodus 35:2Six days work should be done, but on the seventh day they were to honor a holy day, a sabbath of rest or be put to death.

Exodus 35:2 · KJV

2Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.

D.Holy Calling

This is a unique calling that the world cannot hear.

2 Timothy 1:9You have been made a partaker of a distinctively different calling, a holy calling, that is not after the world but after the purposes of God.

2 Timothy 1:9 · KJV

9Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Hebrews 3:1You are a part of the holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling. Consider it well!

Hebrews 3:1 · KJV

1Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

E.Holy Scripture

The Bible is distinctly unlike any other book in the world because it is God’s Word.

2 Timothy 3:15; Romans 1:2They are holy in that they are unequaled, and pure from error.

Ezekiel 39:25 · KJV

25Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;

Luke 1:49Mary’s proclamation was “… holy is his name.”

Luke 1:49 · KJV

49For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

B.Do Not Profane His Holy Name

Leviticus 20:3; Leviticus 21:6; Leviticus 22:2; Leviticus 22:32The Lord commands man not to profane His holy name (Exodus 20:7).

Leviticus 20:3 · KJV

3And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people; because he hath given of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary, and to profane my holy name.

Leviticus 21:6 · KJV

6They shall be holy unto their God, and not profane the name of their God: for the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and the bread of their God, they do offer: therefore they shall be holy.

Leviticus 22:2, 32 · KJV

2Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me: I am the LORD. 32Neither shall ye profane my holy name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am the LORD which hallow you,

Ezekiel 36:20-21; Ezekiel 39:7; Amos 2:7The heathen profaned His holy name because of the testimony of His people. They lived for the world. You will cause the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme God by your inconsistent walk.

Ezekiel 36:20-21 · KJV

20And when they entered unto the heathen, whither they went, they profaned my holy name, when they said to them, These are the people of the LORD, and are gone forth out of his land. 21But I had pity for mine holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the heathen, whither they went.

Ezekiel 39:7 · KJV

7So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.

Amos 2:7 · KJV

7That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane my holy name:

C.God Declares His Holiness

Isaiah 6:1-10The purpose of the vision Isaiah had of God on His throne with the seraphim circling above, was to declare to the world that the Lord of hosts is Holy, Holy, Holy!

Isaiah 6:1-10 · KJV

1In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. 4And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. 5Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. 6Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: 7And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. 8Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. 9And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. 10Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

Revelation 4:8-11The four beasts cry, “Holy, Holy, Holy!” day and night without any rest.

Revelation 4:8-11 · KJV

8And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. 9And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, 10The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

D.Assault on God’s Holiness

2 Kings 19:20-35; 2 Chronicles 32:14-19Sennacherib’s assault of God was on His holiness stating that the Lord God was no different from any other god. The ungodly heathen were challenging God’s uniqueness and unparalleled character. The Lord responded to prove the difference by destroying all of Sennacherib’s mighty men.

2 Kings 19:20-35 · KJV

20Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard. 21This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee. 22Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel. 23By thy messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down the tall cedar trees thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his Carmel. 24I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places. 25Hast thou not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient times that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste fenced cities into ruinous heaps. 26Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up. 27But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me. 28Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest. 29And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof. 30And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. 31For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this. 32Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it. 33By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD. 34For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake. 35And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

2 Chronicles 32:14-19 · KJV

14Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand? 15Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand? 16And his servants spake yet more against the LORD God, and against his servant Hezekiah. 17He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand. 18Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city. 19And they spake against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, which were the work of the hands of man.

Isaiah 14:13-14Satan was cast out of heaven due to his assault on God’s holiness. Satan said, “I will be like the most High”, that was an attack on the holiness of God, His uniqueness and distinctiveness. The Lord stands alone above all of His creation as the “… only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords. Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; to whom be honor and power everlasting.” (1 Timothy 6:15-16)

Isaiah 14:13-14 · KJV

13For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

III. The Challenge to Believers to Be Holy

A.Fashion Yourself Differently

1 Peter 1:13-16Don’t fashion yourself after the former lusts of your ignorance. Be distinctively different because it is written, “Be ye holy; for I am holy.”

1 Peter 1:13-16 · KJV

13Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

Romans 12:1-2Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God. Be not conformed to this world. Be unique, transformed, by having your mind renewed in the knowledge of Him. “…prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.”

Romans 12:1-2 · KJV

1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

1 Peter 2:9You are “…a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people.” Therefore live like it.

1 Peter 2:9 · KJV

9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

B.Separate Yourself from Evil

1 Peter 4:1-4Arm yourself with the mind of Christ and do not waste the rest of your life living to the lusts of men. They will think it is strange that you do not run to the same excess of riot that they do, but they do not understand God’s holiness.

1 Peter 4:1-4 · KJV

1Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; 2That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 3For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: 4Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

2 Timothy 2:19-26“Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

2 Timothy 2:19-26 · KJV

19Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 20But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. 21If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. 22Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. 24And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1Separate from unbelievers and touch not the unclean thing. “Cleanse yourself from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

2 Corinthians 6:14-18 · KJV

14Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

2 Corinthians 7:1 · KJV

1Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Titus 2:11-14The grace of God teaches you that you should deny ungodliness and worldly lusts and should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.

Titus 2:11-14 · KJV

11For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Ephesians 5:3-18Let evil “… not be once named among you, as becometh saints;” “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” The light of holiness that shines from you will expose their sinful deeds. They will either hate the light or come to the light and worship God. (John 3:20-21)

Ephesians 5:3-18 · KJV

3But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7Be not ye therefore partakers with them. 8For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. 12For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. 13But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. 14Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. 15See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. 18And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

John 7:7; John 15:19; 1 Thessalonians 2:14-15; 1 John 3:13The world will hate you just like it hated Christ for His holiness. “The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shalt be as his master.” (Luke 6:40)

John 7:7 · KJV

7The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

John 15:19 · KJV

19If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

1 Thessalonians 2:14-15 · KJV

14For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews: 15Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:

1 John 3:13 · KJV

13Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

C.Desire to Purify Yourself

1 John 3:1-3The hope of seeing Him should cause you to purify yourselves as He is pure.

1 John 3:1-3 · KJV

1Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

James 1:27Pure religion before God is to keep yourself unspotted from the world.

James 1:27 · KJV

27Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-7“…this is the will of God, even your sanctification,” that you may know how to “possess your vessel” unto honor.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-7 · KJV

3For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: 4That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; 5Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: 6That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. 7For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

Hebrews 12:14If you desire to see and understand Him then you must follow peace and holiness.

Hebrews 12:14 · KJV

14Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

2 Peter 1:3-11His divine power has given you all you need to live godly in this life through the knowledge of Him. He has given precious promises that you might be a partaker of His divine nature and escape the corruption that is in the world through lust.

2 Peter 1:3-11 · KJV

3According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 3:14Be diligent that you may be found in peace and without spot.

2 Peter 3:14 · KJV

14Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

D.Put on the New Man

Colossians 3:5-17Mortify the deeds of the flesh by the power of the Spirit and put on the new man in Christ.

Colossians 3:5-17 · KJV

5Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 11Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. 12Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 15And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Ephesians 4:17-24Put on the new man which is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Ephesians 4:17-24 · KJV

17This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20But ye have not so learned Christ; 21If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Romans 13:10-14Put on the armor of light and do not make provision for the flesh to fulfill your lusts.

Romans 13:10-14 · KJV

10Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. 11And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. 12The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. 13Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 14But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

2 Corinthians 4:3-7You are to shine with holiness for this lost and dying world. Your earthen vessel must be broken so the light of Christ can be seen. Remember the story of Gideon. (Judges 7:15-21)

2 Corinthians 4:3-7 · KJV

3But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 5For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. 6For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

E.Learn to Hate Evil

Psalms 119:128Believe His Word to be right and learn to “hate every false way”.

Psalms 119:128 · KJV

128Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way.

Job 1:1Follow the example of Job that teaches us to fear God and eschew evil.

Job 1:1 · KJV

1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

Deuteronomy 18:9-13Do not learn the heathen’s ways. Learn to be perfect, mature and complete, like your Heavenly Father. (Matthew 5:48)

Deuteronomy 18:9-13 · KJV

9When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. 10There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. 13Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.

Conclusion

Does the Spirit cry in you to say, “I want to be just like my Father?” Then be holy, be unique, distinctly different, and pure in your walk for Christ. Do not pattern yourself after the world in order to win them. They will simply justify themselves by you. Walk in a unique fashion so that they can see the difference. Remember, it is not the outward presentation as much as the inward presentation that will challenge the heart of a lost man for Jesus Christ. “… be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, and in purity.” (1 Timothy 4:12) “…renounce the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending yourself to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:2)
