In this lesson
The righteous shall live his whole life by faith. He is saved by faith and he will now live by faith. In the scriptures this declaration “...The just shall live by faith,” is found four times. (Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:38) Hence you can see this life principle is essential for the saved to understand. A Christian will live either by faith or sight. This world has trained you to live by sight, but our Father wants you to live by faith. The Israelites had a difficult time living for God after they came out of Egypt because they had been trained by the Egyptians! Much of your life will be spent undoing what the world has already sown in you. Things you naturally assume are right must now be carefully examined in the light of the faith and the truth found in God’s Holy Word. (Isaiah 55:8-9)
I. What Is Faith?
Hebrews 11:1-6By faith the elders obtained a good report.
Hebrews 11:1-6 · KJV
1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. 4By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. 5By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
II. Faith Is Based on Knowledge of God’s Word
Romans 10:13-17(Memory Verses) The Word is necessary as a basis of salvation. When you come to Christ, you must accept that the claims of God’s Word are true.
Romans 10:13-17 · KJV
13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 4:16-24Abraham believed God against all earthly hope and fathered a child in his old age. He was blessed because he did not stagger at God’s promises.
Romans 4:16-24 · KJV
16Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, 17(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. 18Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. 19And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb: 20He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. 23Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; 24But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
Hebrews 4:1-2If the Word is not mixed with faith, it is of no profit.
Hebrews 4:1-2 · KJV
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
2 Peter 1:1-10Faith lays the foundation of Jesus Christ in a life. (1 Corinthians 3:11) Then all other spiritual virtues are built thereon.
2 Peter 1:1-10 · KJV
1Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: 2Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
III. Faith Is Necessary to Please God
Hebrews 11:5-6Enoch pleased God by faith, and so must you.
Hebrews 11:5-6 · KJV
5By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Romans 4:1-5Faith is what pleases God, not works. Those who do works in order to gain merit with God are weak in the faith and do not please Him.
Romans 4:1-5 · KJV
1What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? 2For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 4Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Matthew 14:28-32Peter was able to walk on water, by faith, as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus. Likewise, when you keep your eyes on Jesus and off your circumstances, you won’t sink.
Matthew 14:28-32 · KJV
28And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
IV. Faith Must Work by Love
Galatians 5:6, 13-16True faith works by love. Only works done in “...the faith that worketh by love” will God accept. Therefore by love serve one another. “Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” (Romans 13:10)
Galatians 5:6, 13-16 · KJV
6For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. 13For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. 14For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 15But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. 16This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
1 Corinthians 13:2Mountain-moving faith without charity is profitless.
1 Corinthians 13:2 · KJV
2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
2 Peter 1:1-10; 1 Timothy 1:5Intentionally repeatedOne of the goals of the Lord is to bring a man to walk by faith in true charity. In love you will lay your life down for your brethren. (John 15:13) You will not be able to lay down your life in all areas until you can believe the Lord will honor His Word and lift you up. (1 John 3:16)
1 Timothy 1:5 · KJV
5Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
V. Faith Can Be Increased
Luke 17:5-10By prayer, ask God to increase your faith.
Luke 17:5-10 · KJV
5And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith. 6And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you. 7But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? 8And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink? 9Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. 10So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
Galatians 5:22Faith is a fruit of the Spirit. As you walk in the Spirit and yield to Him, faith increases in you.
Galatians 5:22 · KJV
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Romans 10:17Faith comes by hearing and reading God’s Word.
Romans 10:17 · KJV
17So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Matthew 13:31-32The seed of faith needs nourished.
Matthew 13:31-32 · KJV
31Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: 32Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.
Hebrews 11:1-40; Hebrews 13:7Faith increases by observing examples of faith in God’s Word and in life.
Hebrews 11:1-40 · KJV
7By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. 8By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. 11Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. 12Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. 13These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. 15And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. 16But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. 17By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. 20By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. 21By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff. 22By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones. 23By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. 24By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; 25Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; 26Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. 27By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. 28Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. 29By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned. 30By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days. 31By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. 32And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: 33Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 35Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: 36And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: 37They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; 38(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. 39And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: 40God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
Hebrews 13:7 · KJV
7Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
VI. Your Faith Will Be Tried
James 1:2-8The trying of your faith works patience.
James 1:2-8 · KJV
2My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. 5If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
1 Peter 1:5-7You are kept by faith and tried by fire to prove your faith. Remember that it is your faith that is being tried by fire and not you. Your faith will be unto His praise and glory in the end.
1 Peter 1:5-7 · KJV
5Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: 7That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
Hebrews 10:32-39You might experience the spoiling of your goods like many other brothers. "The just shall live by faith.”
Hebrews 10:32-39 · KJV
32But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; 33Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used. 34For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. yourselves} 35Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. 36For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. 37For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. 38Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. 39But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
2 Timothy 3:12All that live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
2 Timothy 3:12 · KJV
12Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
Philippians 1:29As a saint, you are called to suffer.
Philippians 1:29 · KJV
29For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;
Hebrews 5:8Even Jesus learned obedience through the things that He suffered.
Hebrews 5:8 · KJV
8Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
Matthew 13:18-23In the parable of the sower, all the ground received the same sunlight and rain. The ground was being tested to see if the seed could grow effectively. This is a picture of the trying of a believer’s faith. In the case of the stony ground, the sun was pictured as a hot, heavy trial because of the Word. The sun comes to test whether genuine faith is present and to perfect that which is lacking in a believer’s life. In this case, the sun burned out the seed and no fruit was brought to perfection. In the case of the weedy ground, the the weeds and thorns choked the seed because worldliness, riches, and the cares of this life overcame him that received the Word. But in the case of the “good ground”, the seed was forced to drive its roots deeper into the soil for more nourishment, thus making the plant stronger and more stable.
Matthew 13:18-23 · KJV
18Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. 19When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. 20But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; 21Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. 22He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. 23But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
VII. The Benefits of Faith

47Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
John 20:29-31Faith is believing without seeing.
John 20:29-31 · KJV
29Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. 30And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Romans 3:27-28Faith justifies, not works.
Romans 3:27-28 · KJV
27Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. 28Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

1 Peter 1:7-9 · KJV
7That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: 8Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: 9Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Isaiah 26:3 · KJV
3Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
Philippians 4:6-7Don’t be anxious or worried. In faith, a believer should pray about everything and leave all things in the Lord’s hands. This produces a peace and a security that passes the understanding of your circumstances.
Philippians 4:6-7 · KJV
6Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
1 Peter 1:7-8Faith brings joy unspeakable and full of glory.
1 Peter 1:7-8 · KJV
7That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: 8Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
Hebrews 4:1-3, 10You enter into rest through faith in His Word.
Hebrews 4:1-3, 10 · KJV
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. 3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 10For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
Ephesians 3:12You have access by faith with confidence.

Ephesians 2:1-10Through faith we walk victoriously in the plan that is ordained in Christ Jesus and are delivered from this present evil world (Galatians 1:4).
Ephesians 2:1-10 · KJV
1And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
D.Faith Moves Mountains.
Matthew 17:20-21; Mark 11:22-24Faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains.
Matthew 17:20-21 · KJV
20And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
Mark 11:22-24 · KJV
22And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. 23For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Luke 17:6Faith can move a tree.

Matthew 21:21 · KJV
21Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
Mark 9:23All things are possible to those who believe.
Mark 9:23 · KJV
23Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
Conclusion
Therefore, “have faith in God” and be not overcome with doubts and fears. Be confident “...that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” (Philippians 1:6) “...for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” (2 Timothy 1:12) When you don’t understand His plan, and you can’t see His footsteps, then just trust His heart that He’s ordering your way aright. (Psalms 37:23-24). He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).
