In this lesson

In the Christian walk, you must learn to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ. This walk is not a list of rules, but is one of cultivating a friendship with your Lord and Saviour. You accomplish this through prayer. Prayer is communication with God. God speaks to us through His Word and we speak to God through prayer. Prayer is the most common element exemplified by saints in the Bible. Many brothers and sisters of old spent hours on their knees communing with their heavenly Father. Brothers like David, Daniel, and Paul prayed and fasted for weeks to know the mind of God and accomplish the work of God. Jesus, our perfect example, prayed all night before selecting His twelve disciples (Luke 6:12-16). He prayed another time and His countenance was changed (Luke 9:29). Nothing worthwhile or lasting is accomplished unless God’s hand moves, and nothing moves the hand of God like our sincere, fervent prayer!

A close personal relationship with the Father will only come about through prayer, and learning how to pray will only come through the believer’s desire. When the disciples saw Jesus praying they asked Him to teach them to pray, and He did (Luke 11:1-4). As you begin to pray and walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, you will learn to do all things together. The bond of love will grow and a true relationship will develop between you and your Father. You will run together, work together, fellowship together, and even cry together through prayer. You will experience blessing after blessing and find a “friend that sticketh closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24).

I. Prayer Is a Necessity

Philippians 4:6Memory VerseIn everything by prayer let your request be known to God.

Philippians 4:6 · KJV

6Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Hebrews 4:15-16Memory VerseWe should come “boldly” to the throne that we may find mercy and grace in time of need.

Hebrews 4:15-16 · KJV

15For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Ephesians 6:10-18We wrestle not against flesh and blood. We must learn to resist Satan as a good soldier armed for battle. Therefore, armed with these essentials; truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God, we can have power in prayer. The armor gives us confidence before God as we pray one for another with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.

Ephesians 6:10-18 · KJV

10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

II. Nothing Is Too Hard for the Lord

Genesis 18:14The Lord’s own statement to Sarah was. “Is any thing too hard for the LORD?”

Genesis 18:14 · KJV

14Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

Jeremiah 32:17, 27Jeremiah was confident that there was nothing too hard for the Lord.

Jeremiah 32:17, 27 · KJV

17Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee: 27Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?

Jeremiah 33:3The Lord will show you great and mighty things.

Jeremiah 33:3 · KJV

3Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Mark 9:23Memory Verse“… all things are possible to him that believeth.”

23Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

Luke 1:37“… with God nothing shall be impossible.”

Luke 1:37 · KJV

37For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Romans 8:32If it wasn’t too hard for God to give up His Son, then it is not too hard for God to “freely give us all things.”

Romans 8:32 · KJV

32He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

III. You Must Call in Truth

Psalms 145:18-19Memory VerseYou must call in truth. Compare John 4:21-24.

Psalms 145:18-19 · KJV

18The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. 19He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.

Proverbs 28:9He that does not regard God’s Law “…even his prayer is an abomination.”

Proverbs 28:9 · KJV

9He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

Jeremiah 29:11-14When you seek Him with your whole heart in truth He will respond to your petition.

Jeremiah 29:11-14 · KJV

11For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. 12Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. 13And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. 14And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

IV. You Must Ask

James 4:1-2First, you must learn to ask. “You have not because you ask not.”

James 4:1-2 · KJV

1From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? 2Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

Psalms 2:8; James 5:16-18Ask. “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

Psalms 2:8 · KJV

8Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

James 5:16-18 · KJV

16Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. 17Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. 18And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

Matthew 7:7-11; Luke 11:9-13Ask, Seek, Knock

Matthew 7:7-11 · KJV

7Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 9Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Luke 11:9-13 · KJV

9And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 11If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 12Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Matthew 21:21-22Ask in faith and you will receive.

Matthew 21:21-22 · KJV

21Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. 22And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Mark 11:22-24Jesus promises that if you believe, you will receive.

Mark 11:22-24 · KJV

22And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. 23For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

John 15:7-11; John 16:23-24Ask “that your joy might be full”.

John 15:7-11 · KJV

7If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. 9As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. 10If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. 11These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

John 16:23-24 · KJV

23And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. 24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Job 5:8-9Job sought the Lord because he knew that He does great and unsearchable things.

Psalms 81:10-13 · KJV

10I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. 11But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me. 12So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels. 13Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!

1 John 5:14-15We must ask according to His will, not our selfish will. If we know Him, we will know His will.

1 John 5:14-15 · KJV

14And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

V. How to Pray

Matthew 6:5-6Do not pray to be seen of men. Enter into your closet of prayer and shut the door.

Matthew 6:5-6 · KJV

5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Matthew 6:7-8Do not use vain repetition, as do the heathen.

Matthew 6:7-8 · KJV

7But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

10Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

1 John 3:1-3 · KJV

1Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

2 Peter 3:9-13 · KJV

9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Luke 11:5-13 · KJV

5And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; 6For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? 7And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. 8I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

1But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel. 2And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east side of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai. 3And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few. 4So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai. 5And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water. 6And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.

Joshua 9:1-14Joshua and the men asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord and were deceived by the Gibeonites. The Gibeonites were a thorn in Israel’s side all their days. This is the end of compromise and prayerlessness.

Joshua 9:1-14 · KJV

1And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof; 2That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord. 3And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai, 4They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; 5And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. 6And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us. 7And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you? 8And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye? 9And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, 10And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth. 11Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us. 12This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy: 13And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey. 14And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

Luke 22:40-46The disciples fell asleep and failed to pray. Then they were seriously tempted and fell.

Luke 22:40-46 · KJV

40And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. 41And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, 46And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

Matthew 26:31-46Peter was bold in the flesh, but without prayer was weak and seriously fell by denying the Lord. (1 Corinthians 10:12)

Matthew 26:31-46 · KJV

31Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. 32But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. 33Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended. 34Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. 35Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples. 36Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. 37And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 38And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. 39And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 40Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 41He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. 42And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. 43And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 44Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 45Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me. 46And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

VIII. Men Should Keep Praying

Luke 18:1-8KEEP PRAYING! Jesus gave this parable to teach that you should not faint in praying. Men ought “always” to pray.

Luke 18:1-8 · KJV

1And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; 2Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: 3And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. 4And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; 5Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. 6And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. 7And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? 8I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

Luke 11:5-10This parable teaches that a man who demonstrates “importunity” in prayer compels the door of blessing open. In other words, he continues to come even at inopportune times to obtain his request.

Luke 11:5-10 · KJV

5And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; 6For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? 7And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. 8I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. 9And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Matthew 15:21-28Jesus praises this woman saying that she has “great faith” because she kept asking her request even though she was seriously rejected four times by Jesus.

Matthew 15:21-28 · KJV

21Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. 22And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. 23But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. 24But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. 26But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. 27And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. 28Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

2 Corinthians 12:7-12Paul prayed three times for affliction to be taken away. The Lord finally answered him by revealing that His grace was sufficient for him. He states, “…my strength is made perfect in weakness.”

2 Corinthians 12:7-12 · KJV

7And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. 8For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. 9And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. 11I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing. 12Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.

Matthew 26:39-44Jesus prayed three times “…let this cup pass from me”. Jesus was persistent in His requests. Read Hebrews 5:7.

Matthew 26:39-44 · KJV

1 Kings 18:41-44Elijah prayed seven times to start the rain again after a three and one half year drought. He prayed earnestly till he saw God move.

1 Kings 18:41-44 · KJV

41And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain. 42So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees, 43And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. 44And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.

Exodus 17:8-16Moses prayed all day with his hands lifted until the battle was won.

Exodus 17:8-16 · KJV

8Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim. 9And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand. 10So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. 14And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. 15And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi: 16For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

Genesis 18:22-33Abraham prayed for Sodom until he arrived at a mutually acceptable solution with God.

Genesis 18:22-33 · KJV

22And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD. 23And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked? 24Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? 25That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? 26And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes. 27And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes: 28Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it. 29And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake. 30And he said unto him, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there. 31And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake. 32And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake. 33And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.

Genesis 32:24-32Jacob wrestled all night with God until he received a blessing. (Maybe some would not consider this prayer.)

Genesis 32:24-32 · KJV

24And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. 25And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. 26And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 27And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 28And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. 29And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. 30And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. 31And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh. 32Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.

IX. You Are a Priest That Can Intercede

1 Peter 2:2-10As a newborn babe you have entered into a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices through prayer.

1 Peter 2:2-10 · KJV

2As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. 4To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, 5Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 6Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 7Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 8And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Revelation 1:6Christ has made us kings and priests through His blood.

Revelation 1:6 · KJV

6And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 2:12-19We have access as priests to God through faith in His blood.

Ephesians 2:12-19 · KJV

12That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 13But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. 14For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. 18For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. 19Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

Hebrews 4:14-16Intentionally repeatedJesus is our high priest and we as believer priests can come boldly to His throne of grace because of the offering of His body once for all.

Hebrews 4:14-16 · KJV

14Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

X. Learn to Pray for One Another

Colossians 1:9-12Paul prayed that the Colossians “… might be filled with the knowledge of his (God’s) will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.” He prayed that they may be fruitful in every good work and strengthened with all might.

Colossians 1:9-12 · KJV

9For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; 12Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

Ephesians 1:15-17Paul prayed for the Ephesians that they might gain “the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:”

Ephesians 1:15-17 · KJV

Luke 22:31-32 · KJV

James 5:13-16Pray one for another that you may be healed, spiritually and physically.

James 5:13-16 · KJV

13Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. 14Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 16Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

1 Timothy 2:1-8Pray for the government leaders “…lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting.”

1 Timothy 2:1-8 · KJV

1I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. 7Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity. 8I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

John 17:9-23Jesus prayed that we may all become one in truth.

John 17:9-23 · KJV

9I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. 10And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. 11And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. 12While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. 18As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. 19And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. 20Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

John 17:20-21Pray for the souls of the lost to be saved.

John 17:20-21 · KJV

20Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

XI. Hindrances to Prayer

Isaiah 59:1-2Known sin in your life will hinder your prayers.

Isaiah 59:1-2 · KJV

1Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Psalms 66:18Regarding iniquity in your heart will block your prayers.

Psalms 66:18 · KJV

18If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

James 4:1-2Intentionally repeatedYou are not asking fervently because you are too busy trying to produce the answer.

James 4:1-2 · KJV

1From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? 2Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

James 4:3-5“… ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” In other words, you have a selfish motive behind your prayer to fulfill your lusts with the request. The Lord will not answer you because He knows it would hinder your growth.

James 4:3-5 · KJV

3Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. 4Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. 5Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

James 4:6-10Pride will cause God to resist you in your prayers. You think you know better and you will not submit to God. This is the problem of being self-willed. You will not be able to resist the devil until you submit to God’s will, acknowledging that He knows what is best

James 4:6-10 · KJV

6But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Romans 1:21A lack of thankfulness can lead you in a path of darkness that will hinder your prayers. Paul says, “...be ye thankful.” (Colossians 3:15).

Romans 1:21 · KJV

21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

1 John 3:17-23Intentionally repeatedStinginess with your worldly possessions will hinder your prayers.

1 John 3:17-23 · KJV

17But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 18My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. 19And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. 20For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. 21Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. 22And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 23And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

1 Peter 3:7A wrong relationship with your mate will hinder your prayers.

1 Peter 3:7 · KJV

7Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Matthew 5:23-24; 1 Peter 3:8-12Prayer is blocked by wrongs unrighted, debts unpaid, offended brothers not reconciled.

Matthew 5:23-24 · KJV

23Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

1 Peter 3:8-12 · KJV

8Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: 9Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. 10For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: 11Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. 12For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

Mark 11:24-26; Matthew 6:12Unforgiveness grieves the Lord and hinders your prayers.

Mark 11:24-26 · KJV

24Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. 25And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. 26But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 6:12 · KJV

12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

XII. The Importance of Group Prayer

Matthew 18:19-20Gather together with others to pray. If two agree, there is more power in petitioning.

Matthew 18:19-20 · KJV

19Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. 20For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Acts 2:1-4The first church gathered in one accord to pray for ten days. The Lord moved in great power to save multitudes.

Acts 2:1-4 · KJV

1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 2:42-47The first church gathered for prayer often and saw the Lord add to the church daily.

Acts 2:42-47 · KJV

42And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. 46And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 47Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Acts 4:23-31The first church prayed again in one accord. The prayer is recorded. Afterwards they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the Word of God with boldness.

Acts 4:23-31 · KJV

23And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. 24And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: 25Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? 26The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. 27For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 28For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. 29And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, 30By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. 31And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

XIII. Practical Tips in Prayer

Pray more in private than in public. The person who doesn’t speak with the Lord in secret should lay a hand to his mouth and not try to show others how to pray in public. That kind of foolish heart will be praying only to be heard of men.
When you pray in private, pray aloud or at least move your lips (1 Samuel 1:13). There is a tendency to let your mind wander or drift off to sleep if you pray non-verbally.
When asked to publicly lead in prayer, don’t pray long prayers. Consider the circumstances and pray accordingly. Lengthy prayers should be saved for your closet.
When possible, try to gather in group prayer meetings. Attend all night prayer meetings when they are called. Jesus prayed all night (Luke 6:12) and Paul was in watchings (late night prayer times) often (2 Corinthians 11:27). The disciples could not watch with Jesus for one hour in prayer on the night of His arrest. This was an opportunity that they most likely regretted. (Matthew 26:40).
Fasting can accompany seasons of prayer. Jesus recommended it to His disciples for difficult prayer requests (Matthew 17:20-21; Mark 9:29; Matthew 6:16-18). Throughout the ages, men have brought their bodies under subjection and found the power of God through fasting and prayer.
Be definite in your praying, ask specifically for things. This demonstrates your faith! Do not be too general or vague in your petitions or you will never see the request answered. Speak out individual names, places, times, monies, needs, etc. Then you will rejoice at the Lord’s specific answers.
Do not dictate to the Lord how He should answer your prayers. The Lord delights in being creative. He can be so unique in bringing the answer to pass. Read Ephesians 3:20
Pray about a matter until the peace comes, then praise Him for the answer. This might not occur in just one session of prayer, but when the Spirit of God gives you a peace indicating that your Father has heard. Respond in praise and thanksgiving. 2 Chronicles 20:21-22 again, they praised the Lord before they saw the answer.
Determine to pray on your knees when possible. This is a humble position before your Lord, Elijah prayed with his face between his knees (1 Kings 18:42).
Do not allow yourself to be interrupted by little trifles while you are talking with the KING OF KINGS. If you have children, teach them to respect the time of prayer you have set aside, and not disturb you while you are praying.
Learn to share all your feelings before the Lord. Pour out your complaints, frustrations, fears, questions, reservations, and bewilderment before Him in love and respect. Reading the Psalms will show you that David often did this. He was honest and emptied his heart before his Friend (Psalms 62:8 & Psalms 77).
During fellowships with other believers, ask them to tell you of answered prayer in their lives. This will encourage you to continue to pray about certain matters.
Keep a record of answered prayers in the back of your Bible. Note the date you started praying and when the answer came. This will be very encouraging to you and will increase your faith. Also, it will establish a memorial for your children to appreciate. It proves that the Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

Conclusion

You should now be ready to take up the responsibility and privilege of prayer. Commune with Him often. Grow in your fellowship with Him day by day. Then pray with the understanding that our Father is the “ALMIGHTY GOD”, whose resources are unlimited. Realize that your Father is not only able to perform your greatest request, but when He has done so there is an infinite amount of untapped power remaining. As your faith increases, ask for many things. The Lord delights in BIG prayers. "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” (Jeremiah 33:3)
